Are you just busy or are you really working???

I had this discussion with my wife one night after a long day at work for both of us.  The idea that you are working for an eight hour day is an illusion.   You might be at your desk for 8 hours.  You might be in your office building for 8 hours.  You might even be looking at a pile of work and a heap of email for 8 hours but you are not working for 8 hours.  I can hear what you are thinking.... then what am I doing for 8 hours?  You are busy not working.

Today's knowledge worker is only producing 2-4 hours of "work" a day.  That's right 2 hours of work when you are there for 8 hours or more!

Shuffling papers, browsing and processing email and BSing with a coworker is not work that's being busy.  Work is replying to an important time driven email.  Attending a meeting that has a purpose and outcome.  Don't even get me started on meetings that don't produce outcomes.

So the next time you are working check yourself to see if you are working or just busy.

Percy Cerutty Says What?

I have been studying training techniques, philosophies and methods of great runners and running coaches.  I came across some quotes from Percy Cerutty and I immedieatly felt close to his style.

Here are just a couple of his quotes.

“While a man is racing he must hate himself and his competitors.”
Percy Cerutty

“Hard things take time to do. Impossible things take a little longer.”
Percy Cerutty

Percy was also a fan of weight training for runners from milers to ultra marathoners.  He believed that you must train the WHOLE runner and all of his body parts.  Not just the running ones.

So, what weight training are you incorperating into your (run) training this week?  Leave your plans in the comments section of this blog post below…
