Are you just busy or are you really working???
Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 11:34AM I had this discussion with my wife one night after a long day at work for both of us. The idea that you are working for an eight hour day is an illusion. You might be at your desk for 8 hours. You might be in your office building for 8 hours. You might even be looking at a pile of work and a heap of email for 8 hours but you are not working for 8 hours. I can hear what you are thinking.... then what am I doing for 8 hours? You are busy not working.
Today's knowledge worker is only producing 2-4 hours of "work" a day. That's right 2 hours of work when you are there for 8 hours or more!
Shuffling papers, browsing and processing email and BSing with a coworker is not work that's being busy. Work is replying to an important time driven email. Attending a meeting that has a purpose and outcome. Don't even get me started on meetings that don't produce outcomes.
So the next time you are working check yourself to see if you are working or just busy.
